Natural Disasters such as cyclones, earthquakes, hurricanes cause damage to human life, property, infrastructure, and economy and pose a challenge for immediate aid/relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.

Humanitarian Aid

The primary objective of humanitarian aid is to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity. Humanitarian aid includes goods such as food aid, education, healthcare, vehicles, clothing, blankets, tents, prefabricated houses, water purifying, water storage items and other similar goods of prime necessity forwarded as aid to those affected by disaster. Humanitarian aid aims to bring short term relief to victims until long term relief can be provided by the government and other institutions.

Ampscon supports four UN entities that have primary roles in the delivery of humanitarian aid and relief assistance

• United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for operational activities for natural disaster mitigation, prevention, and preparedness
• United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for protecting refugees and resolving refugee problems worldwide.
• United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for helping children with effective, low-cost solutions to counter threat to their survival.
• The World Food Programme (WFP) provides food relief to millions of people, who are victims of disasters.

Rehabilitation & Reconstruction

The emergency period, which focuses on immediate relief action oriented to saving lives and meeting the most urgent needs of the population affected by the disaster, is followed by the post-disaster recovery phase that encompasses rehabilitation and reconstruction.

While “Rehabilitation” is to restore to near original condition, “Reconstruction” is to comprehensively rebuild the essential physical infrastructure and shelter and then gradually introduce sanitation, sewerage, rainwater harvesting, improved land and water management etc. In Rehabilitation and reconstruction, the central objective is to normalize the life of the affected communities and to get the social sectors (health, education, housing) and production sectors (industry, communications, transportation, etc.) functioning.
